Freshmen only scholarships:

Freshman Accountancy Major Scholarship

Offered to attract qualified students into the accountancy program at UW-L
Criteria:

  1. freshman to be enrolled full time who plans to major in
    accountancy
  2. cumulative gpa of at least a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale
  3. graduate in the upper 25% of the class
  4. special application required and available from the Accountancy Department


UW-L Alumni Association Scholarship for Incoming Freshmen
Provided by the board of directors of the UW-La Crosse Alumni Association.
Criteria:

  1. freshman to be enrolled full-time
  2. must be child or grandchild of a UW-L alum
  3. demonstrated scholarship, leadership, personality and character as well as involvement in extracurricular activities
  4. good academic standing
  5. provide name of UW-L alum and your relationship to that individual


UW-L Alumni Association Milwaukee Alumni Network Scholarships
Funded by members of the UW-L Alumni Association with matching funds from the UW-L Foundation. This is a new award for 2011-12.
Criteria:

  1. Applicant/Recipient must be a UW-L alum who is also a member of the UW-L Alumni Association and qualified to be a member of the Milwaukee alumni network; or a child, grandchild, sibling, niece or nephew of a UW-L alum who is also a member of the UW-L Alumni Association and qualified to be a member of the Milwaukee alumni network.
  2. Recipient must be enrolled as a full time freshman, sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student
  3. Financial need shall be a consideration in the selection process.
  4. Recipient must be in good academic standing; grade point average will be a consideration.


Annett Quartet Scholarship Fund
The Annett Quartet is a creation of the UW-L Symphony Society and will consist of four UW-L full time freshmen student musicians: two violins, one viola and one cello.
Criteria:

  1. freshman to be enrolled full time
  2. no requirement that a particular major be declared
  3. election shall be made on the basis of live auditions which will be required and held in the spring of each year.
    Audition materials are as follows:
    Major scales--C,G,Bb,A,E; and Melodic Minor scales—a,d,f.
    Auditions shall require two contrasting selections:
    One movement of a selection by J.S. Bach and one movement of a Classical or Romantic concerto.
    Auditions may be played with or without accompaniment.
  4. quartet will rehearse at least two hours per week
  5. quartet will perform as part of a program once each semester
  6. quartet will be members of the UW-L Orchestra
  7. remuneration from any outside paid performances (weddings, receptions, etc.) will be retained by the individual members of the QuartetLink to music application

Bruce Boegel Scholarship for Richland Center
Established by Bruce Boegel, '57 UW-L graduate, to recognize a student from Richland Center who will be attending UW-L.
Criteria:

  1. freshman graduating from Richland Center High School to be enrolled full time
  2. based on academic achievement, extra-curricular activities and honors while attending Richland Center
  3. financial need shall be considered
  4. special application required and available from the Richland Center High School guidance office


Laura and Joe Bowers Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund
Established by Mary Hampton, an emeritus from the economics department, in memory of her parents Laura and Joe Bowers.
Criteria:

  1. freshman who has graduated from La Crosse Central, La Crosse Logan or Aquinas to be enrolled full time
  2. maintain special emphasis or interest in economics
  3. good academic standing
  4. demonstrate scholarly abilities and a commitment to enhance and strengthen the neighborhoods and quality of life in La Crosse
  5. financial need should be a primary consideration


Christopher Carlson Memorial Scholarship
Established by family and friends in memory of Christopher Carlson, an incoming freshman who died from injuries sustained in a fall the weekend before classes started. The fund supports incoming freshman from Ladysmith, Christopher's hometown.
Criteria:

  1. first year student who graduated from Ladysmith High School or a successor institution to be enrolled full time
  2. good academic standing with at least a 3.0 gpa
  3. demonstrate financial need


Dolores Carroll Scholarship for Minority Students
Established in memory of Dolores Carroll who served as a secretary in the minority affairs office at UW-L for several years.
Criteria:

  1. freshman racial minority student to be enrolled full time
  2. based on scholastic ability, general service work and involvement in organization


John Castek Sr. Memorial Scholarship
Established in memory of John Castek Sr. to recognize academic excellence in the pursuit of a career in teaching.
Criteria:

  1. freshman to be enrolled full time for all four years of award in the School of Education in a career in teaching
  2. rank in top 25% of high school class
  3. composite score of 24 or higher on ACT
  4. submit one letter of recommendation from teacher
  5. renewable for all four years of the recipient's undergraduate program and must meet the criteria
  6. next four-year cycle offered in the academic year 2014-15


Margaret Chew Freshman Scholarships for Geography Majors
Established to honor late Professor Margaret Chew who served the UW-L Department of Geography and Earth Science for many years.

  1. number of awards: Up to two awards per academic year
  2. amount of each award: $500 per award
  3. must declare geography as a major at the time of admission
  4. minimum ACT score of 25 out of 36 or its SAT equivalent
  5. a 200-250 word typed statement explaining why the applicant has chosen geography as a major

Choral Music Scholarship Fund
The choral music program funds these scholarships annually through ticket sales and other fund raisers for student scholarships.
Criteria:

  1. high school graduate to be enrolled full time as a freshman with a major in choral music education
  2. maintain a 2.75 gpa during both fall and spring semesters
  3. must audition/enroll in at least one choral organization (preferably Concert Choir)Link to music application
  4. special application required and available on Foundation Web site or from the Music Department


Virginia Kaster Ennis Scholarship

Established by Virginia Ennis for a student from Onalaska High School who plans to enroll at UW-L.
Criteria:

  1. freshman from Onalaska High School who has moved into the district of Onalaska after the third Friday of September of their freshman year from any other school district and to be enrolled full time
  2. participated in at least three extracurricular activities to demonstrate their willingness to adapt to a new school system. Varied extracurricular
    takes precedent over activities in one area, such as sports or music.
  3. at least a 3.25 gpa based on eight semesters
  4. involved in at least one community activity separate from school
  5. awarded after successful completion of one semester
  6. special application required and available from the Onalaska High School guidance office


Benton Fowler Memorial Scholarship
Established by the family and friends of Benton Fowler, a La Crescent High School student who was also actively involved in UW-L's WLSU radio station.
Criteria:

  1. freshman graduating from La Crescent High planning to enroll full time at an accredited institution
  2. ranks in the top one-third of the graduating class
  3. an active and contributing member of the high school band for at least two years
  4. demonstrate above average motivation, citizenship, attitude and relations with others
  5. if no qualified student from the band, then it may be offered to a vocal student who meets the above criteria
  6. payment will be made in the spring semester after completing the fall semester and enrolling in the spring semester--proof of registration is required
  7. special application required and available from the La Crescent High School guidance office


Roger and Mary Harring Scholarship and Awards Fund
Established by the Chevrolet Corporation in 1993 to honor Coach Harring as the Outstanding Division III Coach of the Year. Roger Harring has been on the exercise and sport science department faculty since 1969.
Criteria:

  1. freshman accepted and to be enrolled full time
  2. preference given to a male
  3. demonstrate interest in fitness and sport
  4. financial need should be considered


H.O.P.E. Scholarship at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse
Established by the Hmong Organization Promoting Education, an approved student organization at UW-L, to support Hmong students.
Criteria:

  1. must be a Hmong student with at least a 2.5 gpa
  2. one scholarship awarded to an incoming Hmong freshman and one scholarship awarded for a continuing Hmong student
  3. in addition to the regular application for incoming freshman, an additional essay of 300 words or less will be required on the following: "How will a college education benefit you and what will it help you to contribute to the Hmong community."
  4. application must include two letters of recommendation from an employer, high school teacher or high school counselor.
The Linda Host Memorial Scholarship Fund for Mathematics
Established in memory of Professor Linda H. Host, the first female member of the Mathematics Department faculty, by her spouse David Bange, former UW-L colleagues and friends. Dr. Host served on the faculty from 1983 to 2005. In addition to her interest in mathematics, she was an avid reader of fiction, non-fiction, history and biographies.
Criteria:

  1. Must be an incoming freshman who has been accepted for admission to UW-L no later than April of the calendar year in which he/she shall enter the institution to be enrolled full-time;
  2. Must be enrolled for the fall semester in a mathematics course at or above the level of calculus, and is considering a major in mathematics, statistics or mathematics education;
  3. Has demonstrated both talent and interest in mathematics by having an ACT score of 31 or above (on the math portion of the ACT), and active participation in organizations, competitions or summer programs in mathematics, physics, or other physical sciences
  4. Applicants are encouraged to provide a list of books that he/she has read (other than required classroom reading) and found noteworthy. These books may be fiction or non-fiction.
  5. Financial need will be considered, but only as a tie-breaker.

John Kaczmarek Senior Scholarship
Established in memory of John Kaczmarek, a ‘32 graduate of UW-L. He was a coach, teacher, guidance counselor and commissioner of athletics for the Milwaukee School System.
Criteria:

  1. freshman graduating from John Marshall High School in Milwaukee to be enrolled full time
  2. based on scholarship and leadership
  3. must have financial need
  4. offered to another Milwaukee High School if no one is selected from John Marshall

Larry Lebiecki Scholarship
Established by family and friends to honor Larry Lebiecki at his retirement from UW-L as Asst. Chancellor, Administrative Services.
Criteria:

  1. freshman to be enrolled full time
  2. graduated in the top 15% of high school class
  3. Awarded to a female student in odd-numbered years (2011-12) and a male in even-numbered years (2012-13)


Department of Mathematics Scholarship Fund

Established by the mathematics faculty for support of students majoring in mathematics.
Criteria:

  1. freshman who has been accepted for admissions to UW-L no later than April of the calendar year in which he/she
    shall enter the institution to be enrolled full time
  2. enrolled for the fall semester in a mathematics course at or above the level of calculus
  3. above average grade point average
  4. show promise in mathematics and have demonstrated an interest and talent in mathematics by: (a) scoring in the top 250 students in Wisconsin on the American High School Mathematics Examination (AHSME) or scoring among the top 2% of students taking the MAA Wisconsin Section Exam; or (b) scoring 4 or better on the College Board Advanced Placement Calculus Exam or earning college credit with a final grade higher than B in a college mathematics course at or above the level of Calculus; or (c) ACT score 28 or higher on the mathematics portion


Stuart Morton McIlraith Scholarship I
Established by Stuart and Lorraine McIlraith to recognize scholastic achievement in an entering freshman student.
Criteria:

  1. freshman to be enrolled full time
  2. minimum of 28 ACT
  3. rank in the top 15%
  4. should contemplate taking at least two biology courses during the year of the award
  5. strong academic background from high school courses
  6. in developing a renaissance person, a student should plan on taking basic courses from many different areas


Eugene & Arleen O'Brien Scholarship
Established by Dennis O'Brien in honor of his parents, Eugene and Arleen O'Brien, for a graduating senior student who plans to enroll at UW-L.
Criteria:

  1. freshman graduating from Black River Falls High School to be enrolled full time
  2. top 20% of high school class
  3. a composite ACT score of 24 or better
  4. based on leadership and scholarship and involved in extracurricular activities
  5. special application required and available from the Black River Falls guidance office


COL. EDWIN L. OVERHOLT, M.D., FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP FOR WISCONSIN VETERANS FUND
This scholarship was established in 2010 by the Overholt Family in honor and memory of their father, Dr. Edwin L. Overholt. Dr. Overholt was sent to the front lines of the Korean War just days after the invasion began and only two years after becoming an MD, part of a task force of 500 against over 30 world-class tanks and thousands of infantry, and saved lives without regard for himself. He was only a captain then. He would give the US Army a career, and then another career to Gundersen Lutheran Health System. Throughout his civilian career, they affectionately called him “Colonel.” (Ed Marek, 3/2/08)

UW-L Physics Freshman Scholarship
Established by faculty and staff in the UW-L Department of Physics to recruit freshman for the physics department.
Criteria:

  1. freshman to be enrolled full time with a major in physics or physics/engineering

Kenneth and Sharron Ring Scholarship for Entering Freshman in Physics: Dual Degree Engineering
Established by Kenneth and Sharron Ring who are friends of the University interested in promoting the sciences at UW-La Crosse.
Criteria:

  1. recipient must be an entering freshman enrolled full time at UW-L with a major in physics: dual degree engineering
  2. recipient must be in good academic standing with above average grade point average
  3. financial need may be considered

Theodore W. and Alice O. Rozelle Scholarship Fund in Mathematics
Established by Richard and Lee Rozelle and friends in memory of their parents Theodore and Alice to support student scholarships in the mathematics department. Theodore was a faculty member in the mathematics department from 1946-1971.
Criteria:

  1. freshman to be enrolled full time with a major in mathematics
  2. at least a 27 on the ACT test, both comprehensive and mathematics
  3. financial need may be considered only as a single but not necessarily a deciding factor


Sentry Insurance Leadership Scholarship
The Sentry Insurance Scholarship is designed to help develop future business and community leaders.
Criteria:

  1. freshman ranking in the upper 15%
  2. major in one of the following: business administration, computer science (MIS), accountancy, finance or mathematics emphasis in statistics accepted
  3. extracurricular activities, community activities, charitable organizations etc that indicate significant leadership records and outstanding leadership potential
  4. scholarship is renewable for up to four years as long as a 3.3 gpa or above is maintained and continues to pursue a degree in one of the above areas of study
  5. special application required and available from the Foundation Office


Fred A. Singer Scholarship
This was established by the parents of Fred Singer who was a graduate of Muskego High School and a '72 UW-L graduate.
Criteria:

  1. freshman to be enrolled full time
  2. preference given to Muskego High School senior but if no candidate from Muskego High School, recipient may qualify from Waukesha County
  3. rank in top 25% of high school class
  4. demonstrated leadership qualities
  5. financial need may be considered especially as a tie breaker


Donald and Helmer Strand Freshmen Scholarships
Established in memory of Donald Strand who served as a budget officer for many years and his father, Helmer, to recognize academic excellence at Blair High School and Central High School.
Criteria:

  1. freshman to be enrolled full time
  2. in odd-numbered years (2009-10) offered to a graduating senior from Blair High School
  3. in even-numbered years (2008-09) offered to a graduating senior from La Crosse Central High School with a major in exercise & sport science. Health and recreation majors may be considered if no qualified physical education student can be designated
  4. above average grade point
  5. demonstrate strong leadership in extracurricular activities
  6. financial need should be considered
  7. scholarship will be paid in full the second semester
  8. in the event that there are no entering freshman that meet the criteria, continuing students graduating from Blair or Central High Schools may be considered as long as they meet the criteria

Peter J. Talen Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established by family and friends of Peter who was a theatre arts major at UW-L and was involved in many campus productions.
Criteria:

  1. Recipient must be enrolled full time at UW-La Crosse with a major in theatre arts
  2. Recipient must be an entering freshman
  3. Recipient must be in good academic standing with above average grade point average
  4. Financial need may be considered

Richard & Ethel Thrune Scholarships
Established by Richard and Ethel Thrune to recognize and support outstanding graduates from Brookwood, Cashton and Westby High Schools who plan to attend UW-La Crosse. Scholarship may be renewed for sophomore year if recipient maintains appropriate grade point average.
Criteria:

  1. freshman to be enrolled full time
  2. one award selected from each school to Brookwood High School, Cashton High School and those from the Coon Valley area (must have attended Coon Valley Elementary School) served by Westby High School are eligible to apply. If there are no Westby students from Coon Valley
    Elementary School, the scholarship will be open to any Westby High school student that meets the other criteria.
  3. based on academic performance and the leadership qualities displayed in school and participation in extracurricular activities
  4. scholarship is renewable for the sophomore year based on satisfactory advancement
  5. personal interview may be required
  6. letter of recommendation from a high school teacher is required


C. C. Tucker Masonic Scholarship

Established to recognize academic excellence, realizing that service to school, community and church are also desirable traits to be developed during one's high school career.
Criteria:

  1. freshman to be enrolled full time from one of the three public high schools in the Wausau area--Wausau East, Wausau West or D.C. Everest.
  2. special application required and available at high school

Donald P. Weber Veterans Memorial Scholarship

Established in 2008 by Donald J. and Roxanne Weber of La Crosse, Wisconsin, in honor of Don's father, Donald P. Weber. Both Weber men are veterans of the Armed Forces with Donald P. serving in WWII and Donald J. in Vietnam. American Veterans have selflessly protected and defended us through the years. Without them, we would not be able to enjoy the freedoms we have today. This fund was established to support Wisconsin veterans who want to attend a UW System institution of higher learning. Deadline to apply is April 1. Special Application required.

  • Must be a Wisconsin resident and enrolled full time at a UW System institution of higher learning
  • Must be a veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States of America
  • Must be in good academic standing
  • May be a freshman, sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student
  • Financial need will be considered
  • Must attach a copy of DD214


Harold H. Weisse Award Fund

Harold H. Weisse established this fund for entering freshman graduating from the greater La Crosse area.
Criteria:

  1. freshman to be enrolled full time
  2. graduating from the greater La Crosse area
  3. financial need shall be a primary consideration


Esther Risberg West Scholarship
Established in memory of Esther Risberg West, a 1915 graduate of UW-L.
Criteria:

  1. freshman to be enrolled full time awarded in even-numbered years
  2. rank in top 10% of class
  3. have taken the ACT
  4. demonstrate financial need by having a FAFSA form on file with the UW-L Financial Aids Office. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide an opportunity for a college education to a qualified high school student who is without adequate means. Although the earnings from the established endowment could vary from year to year, the recipient should be advised that the scholarship monies, when combined with other financial aid awarded by UW-L, should be able to cover room, board, and tuition costs for four years (summer and j terms excluded)
  5. three written letters of recommendation required from non-relatives including: (a) an educator, (b) a civic leader and (c) one of your own choosing
  6. Next award will be made for the 2014-15 academic year

 

 


Xcel Energy Scholarships
Established by Xcel Energy to benefit students served by Xcel Energy.
Criteria:

  1. two scholarships awarded--one for freshman and one for continuing sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time
  2. either a major in computer science, biology with a concentration in environmental, any major within the College of Business Administration or any qualifying major within the College of Liberal Studies with a minor in environmental studies
  3. at least a 3.0 gpa
  4. financial need may be considered
  5. must have come to UW-L from a county within Wisconsin that is served by Xcel Energy which include: Ashland, Barron, Bayfield, Buffalo, Chippewa, Clark, Dunn, Eau Claire, Iron, Jackson, La Crosse, Marathon, Monroe, Pepin, Pierce, Polk, Price, Rusk, St. Croix, Sawyer, Taylor, Trempealeau, Vernon, Vilas and Washburn


Ziemann Family Scholarship Fund in Exercise and Sport Science
Established by Margaret and Terry Ziemann, '51 graduate of Central and '55 graduate of UW-L to support students majoring in the Exercise and Sport Science. Terry's father was a '25 graduate of Central. Terry coached football, basketball and track in the Navy.
Criteria:

  1. freshman graduate of a La Crosse County or La Crescent high school and to be enrolled full time with a major in Exercise and Sport Science
  2. above average grade point average
  3. school/community involvement in voluntary service as well as an applicant's demonstrated interest in fitness and sport

Established by Mary Hampton, economic emeriti faculty member of UW-L, to support the University bands.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time participating in a University concert band
  2. at least a 3.0 gpa
  3. special application required and available on the Foundation Web site or from the Music Department


Betty Wenzel Brown Scholarship Fund in English Education
Established in memory of Ms. Brown ('41) by a former student who had Ms. Brown for English-Latin in Tomah High School.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior female
  2. need not be enrolled full time
  3. major in English Education (preparing to become an English teacher)
  4. good academic standing with at least a 3.0 gpa
  5. financial need shall be considered


Kenneth and Marilyn Buresh Minority Scholarship in Allied Health
Established to honor the Buresh's daughter, Ellen Buresh Finch, a '77 graduate in mass communications at UW-L.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior minority student to be enrolled full time with a major in the allied health field
  2. good academic standing
  3. financial need shall be considered
  4. may be renewed if criteria is met


Kathryn S. Cappelen Teaching Scholarship

Established by Kathryn Cappelen, a '45 graduate, to support teaching. She was a long-time employee of the La Crosse School District now retired.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with preference given to entering freshman who are graduates of La Crosse area public schools within the School District of La Crosse
  2. major in either elementary or secondary education leading toward a career in teaching
  3. above average grade point average
  4. financial need should be considered but shall not be determinative of eligibility
  5. most important factors in selecting recipient shall be student's enthusiasm for teaching career, demonstrated leadership qualities, and high humanistic traits. For this purpose humanistic traits shall include friendliness, warmth, consideration of others, and good people skills—
    traits that promote a happy and nurturing classroom for students of the candidate


Roland W. and Laura J. Christensen Scholarship in Mathematics

Established to honor Roland for receiving the first National Assistant Coach of the Year in 1997. Roland also served on the mathematics faculty for 32 years.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior (preferably but not necessarily a male) to be enrolled full time with a declared major or minor in mathematics
  2. at least a 3.0 gpa in mathematics, however, this gpa requirement may be waived by the Committee for special or extraordinary circumstances
  3. demonstrate interest in sport and fitness
  4. preference shall be given to students who have a demonstrated interest in teaching mathematics
  5. selection committee shall renew the scholarship to a qualified student through their fourth year provided they continue to meet all of the criteria set forth above to the satisfaction of the Committee


David M. Cole Award in Economics and Finance
Established in honor of David Cole by the faculty of the departments of economics and finance.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in economics
  2. cumulative 3.25 gpa or higher
  3. financial need may be considered
  4. based on academic achievement, especially in economics and finance
  5. good performance in the intermediate macroeconomics and microeconomics courses (ECO 305 and 308) is particularly valued


Community Credit Union Scholarship
Community Credit Union has established a scholarship program offered to members for one incoming freshman and one non-traditional student.
Criteria:

  1. freshman or continuing student full or part time attending an accredited university/college/technical college
  2. member of Community Credit Union (graduating high school senior must be a YALE Club member)
  3. special application required and available from the Community Credit Union or the Foundation Office


Joseph Cordeiro Scholarship for Students Studying String Instruments
Established by the family and friends of Joseph Cordeiro.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time but does not have to be a music major or minor
  2. member of University Orchestra
  3. proficient in or studying strings (piano or harp are not included in the string category)
  4. good academic standing
  5. entering freshman must submit letter of recommendation from high school orchestra director. Formal application and solo audition tLink to music applicationape required; must be willing to give live audition if requested.
  6. special application required and available on the Foundation Web site or from the Music Department

Cordeiro Quintet Fund at the UW-L
Established by Bob & Janet Roth to support a quintet in memory of Joseph Cordeiro.
Criteria: Recipients must be registered members of the UW-L Symphony Orchestra and meet the other following criteria:

  1. Make up:
    a. Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon and Horn
    b. Open to any class freshman to super-senior
  2. Auditions:
    a. Completed the preceding spring

Established by John Ellison for an entering freshman or continuing student from Blair High School, WI, who enrolls at UW-L or to a teaching faculty member within the Blair-Taylor School District for at least two years.

  2. also an award is given to a teaching faculty from Blair-Taylor


The Equitable Life Foundation/ Chancellor's Minority Fund
This scholarship was funded by The Equitable Life Foundation to help minority students to attend UW-L. Minority is defined as a domestic multicultural student.

William Estes Choral Music Award
Established to provide scholarships to a student who has demonstrated choral accomplishments.
Criteria:

  1. freshman or continuing student to be enrolled full time
  2. apply live audition or by submitting a solo audition tape by March 1 for continuing students that will be judged on musicianship, tone, color, range, vocal promise, and beauty of voice
  3. be willing to give a live audition if requested

Doris Fuka Communication Studies/Theatre Arts Fund

Norman L. Gillette, Sr., Family Fund Scholarship
Established by family and friends in memory of Norman Gillette who was a successful entrepreneur and businessman as Chairman of the Board of Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co of La Crosse, Rochester, Decorah, Iowa and Mankato, Minnesota. Mr. Gillette was an outstanding community activist and philanthropist who gave generously of his time, talent and treasure to the community.
Criteria:

  1. freshman or continuing student to be enrolled at UW-L from the La Crosse area
  2. above average grade point average


Gertrude and Donald Sandy Gordon Jazz Scholarship Fund

Established by Gertrude Gordon, a long time friend of
UW-L, to encourage young people interested in jazz music careers and music students who wish to pursue their music education and training.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with an interest in jazz music
  2. music students or pursuing an undergraduate degree in music
  3. at least a 2.5 gpa

Alice Hagar Elementary Education Scholarship
Alice Hagar was a librarian of the Training School Library on the Campus of La Crosse State Teachers College in La Crosse. When the Campus School closed in 1974, she moved into the Currciulum and Instruction Center of Morris Hall as a librarian until her retirement in 1982.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in elementary education
  2. at least a 3.2 gpa on a 4.0 scale
  3. financial need should be considered only as a tie breaker
  4. at least two awards shall be made
  5. renewable up to a total of four years if recipient meets the criteria and no recipient may receive the scholarship for more than a total of four years


Freda and Arnold Hanson Endowment Scholarship Fund in Elementary Education
Established to honor two long time residents of Viroqua for Viroqua High School graduates planning to become elementary teachers. Freda taught in several one-room grade schools and attended classes at UW-L during nights, weekends and summers to eventually earn a bachelor's and master's degree at the university.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full or part time with a major in elementary education
  2. graduate of Viroqua High School
  3. above average grade point average
  4. financial need should be a consideration


Mary H. Hebberd Endowment Fund for English
Mary Hebberd retired in 1976 as Associate Professor of English at UW-L. She was a member of the faculty since 1947 and in addition to teaching was the first director of public relations and alumni affairs and a member of the board of the UW-L Foundation.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full or part time with a major in English
  2. at least a 3.5 gpa
  3. financial need should be considered


Hmong Culture and Education Scholarship
This fund was established by Maggie Lee McHugh, Dr. Bee Lo, and Vong Lao, authors and illustrator of Ka’s Garden/Kab Lub Vaj, a bilingual children’s book. Proceeds from the sale of the book will be used to fund this scholarship established for the purpose of supporting Hmong students dedicated to education and cultural diversity.
The recipient must meet the following criteria:

  1. Must be enrolled full-time at UW-La Crosse
  2. Must be a Hmong student with at least a 2.75 gpa
  3. May be a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior
  4. Financial need should be considered
  5. In addition to the regular application, an additional essay of 300 words or less will be required addressing how the student promotes Hmong culture through education


UW-La Crosse Jazz Studies Development Fund
General support of student scholarships in the area of jazz studies at UW-L.
Criteria:

  1. freshman or currently enrolled student to be enrolled full time who demonstrate an interests and ability in jazz
  2. five to ten minute audition tape must be submitted and should include a classical etude or solo and an excerpt demonstrating jazz style
  3. an improvised solo may be included but is not required

Established by Paul ('77) and Karen ('76) Koeller for students who are current employees or former employees or descendents of current or former employees in the brewing or baking industry in La Crosse previously or currently owned and operated by G. Heileman Brewing Company, or its successor, City Brewing Company, or any of their subsidiaries.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior resident of La Crosse County or the La Crosse area (i.e., within 100 miles of La Crosse County) to be enrolled full time with any major
  2. must be in good academic standing with at least a 3.0 gpa
  3. financial need should be considered with preference given to someone who is working to pay their own way through college; consideration should be given to other scholarships and resources available to each applicant
  4. preference should be given to a first generation college attendee
  5. preference given to current employees or former employees or descendents of current or former employees in the brewing or baking industry in La Crosse previously or currently owned and operated by G. Heileman Brewing Company, or its succesor, City Brewing Company, or any of their subsidiaries
  6. a previous recipient can re-apply to receive the scholarship again the next year; however, preference would be given go a different recipient

Established by the UW-L Foundation in honor of Judith Kuipers at the time of her resignation of the Chancellor of UW-L, for student scholarships in symphony orchestra, international studies or diversity at UW-L.

Established by David and Harriet Mewaldt. Dave served the music faculty from 1959-1982.

  4. must be involved in at least one major instrumental organization on the UW-L campus

Milwaukee Foundation board working with the Journal Company has established this award to support students at UW-L. If funded, the amount is determined by the Milwaukee Foundation.

  2. pursuing careers in radio, television or other news and entertainment communication media
  3. preference is given to those students who have a current relationship (e.g., relative of active or retired full or part time employees) with Journal Communications, Inc. or one of its subsidiaries, Journal Communications companies include: Journal Sentinel, Inc., Journal Broadcast Group, Norlight Telecommunications Inc., Journal Community Publishing Group, IPC Print Services, and Prime Net).

George C. Nixon Award for UW-L Students Associated with the La Crosse Boys/Girls Club
Established in memory of George Nixon who was associated with the Boys/Girls Club of La Crosse for many years.

  2. current or past member of La Crosse Boys/Girls Club
  3. have demonstrated leadership qualities

Established through a bequest from the late Jay Norris, a respected member of the university's English department.

COL. EDWIN L. OVERHOLT, M.D., FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP FOR WISCONSIN VETERANS FUND
This scholarship was established in 2010 by the Overholt Family in honor and memory of their father, Dr. Edwin L. Overholt. Dr. Overholt was sent to the front lines of the Korean War just days after the invasion began and only two years after becoming an MD, part of a task force of 500 against over 30 world-class tanks and thousands of infantry, and saved lives without regard for himself. He was only a captain then. He would give the US Army a career, and then another career to Gundersen Lutheran Health System. Throughout his civilian career, they affectionately called him “Colonel.” (Ed Marek, 3/2/08)

The Darlene Joan Zielinski Parker Scholarship for Social Justice Fund
Established by family and friends in memory of Darlene, a '76 and '81 graduate of UW-L. Darlene was an elementary school teacher for 31 years. This scholarship will support elementary education majors who are dedicated to and involved in social justice issues.br> Criteria:

  1. must be enrolled full time at UW-La Crosse with a major in elementary education

  3. must be dedicated to and involved in social justice issues on campus or in their home or La Crosse community

Theodora Richter Communication Studies Scholarship
In appreciation for the many fond memories of her students and colleagues, Mrs. Richter established the first scholarship at UW-L exclusively for speech and theatre majors. Mrs. Richter taught speech at UW-L from 1958-1969.

UW-L Symphony Orchestra Scholarship Fund

Established for students participating in the UW-L Symphony Orchestra.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time
  2. participant in the UW-L Symphony Orchestra
  3. at least a 2.5 gpa
  4. qualification shall also be based on a personal audition
  5. performance of string instruments include violin, viola, cello and bass only

Symphonic Brass Quintet Scholarship
Established by Bob and Janet Roth to support a quintet for the symphonic brass.
Criteria: Recipients must be registered members of the UW-L Symphony Orchestra and meet the other following criteria:

  1. Make up:
    a. Two trumpets, one horn, one trombone and one tuba
    b. Recipients must be full time enrolled students at UW-L
    c. There is no major requirement
  2. Auditions:
    a. A "live" audition is required
    b. Auditions will be held during the second semester of the year before the scholarship is awarded
    c. Audition will be heard by: UW-L Orchestra Conductor and members of the UW-L brass and horn faculty
    d. Auditions may be scheduled on regular Music Department audition dates or arrangements for a special audition date may be made with the UW-L Orchestra Conductor
    e. Audition requirements include major scales (C, Ab, G, D and A) and harmonic minor scales (a, d, and f)
    f. Scales should be played at the student's maximum range and at his/her highest controlled speed
    g. Two contrasting solos or two contrasting movements from the same solo that demonstrate the student's musical and technical capabilities
    h. A brief sight-reading exercise provided by the Music Department
    i. Solos may be played with or without accompaniment. If accompanied, student must provide his or her own accompanist
  3. Requirements and Obligations:
    a. Quintet will rehearse a minimum of two (2) hours per week
    b. Students will be expected to prepare outside of the rehearsal time
    c. Quintet will perform as a part of a concert or recital a minimum of once per semester
  4. Remuneration from any paid performances (weddings, receptions, etc) will be retained by the individual members of the quintet.

Established to provide financial assistance to sons and daughters of Local 1081 members.

Established by the Pride Center and Rainbow Unity students in 2010 to assist lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, ally students (LGBTQQIAA) or students with lesbian, gay bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex or asexual (LGBTQQIA) family members.
Criteria:

  1. incoming freshman or continuing student enrolled full-time or part-time
  2. good academic standing
  3. willing to be publically recognized as a recipient of this award
  4. In addition to the regular application, an essay of 300 words or less is required. Please pick one of the following topics for your essay:
    1. Describe your demonstrated leadership for, support of, or involvement in organizations, activities, or issues that benefit the LGBTQQIAA communities.
    2. Write about your personal identity, goals and connectivity to others in the LGBTQQIAA community.
    3. Describe your experience as a member of the LGBTQQIAA community and your experiences being marginalized. How have those experiences impacted you?

Donald P. Weber Veterans Memorial Scholarship

Established in 2008 by Donald J. and Roxanne Weber of La Crosse, Wisconsin, in honor of Don's father, Donald P. Weber. Both Weber men are veterans of the Armed Forces with Donald P. serving in WWII and Donald J. in Vietnam. American Veterans have selflessly protected and defended us through the years. Without them, we would not be able to enjoy the freedoms we have today. This fund was established to support Wisconsin veterans who want to attend a UW System institution of higher learning. Robert and Betty Woodruff Scholarship in Education
Established to honor Robert and Betty Woodruff for serving as role models to the La Crosse Northside community with their demonstrated work ethic and civic and community involvement. Scholarship has been established to help the student trying to attain a degree in the profession of Education.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in education
  2. good academic standing
  3. Committee shall use a scoring system to evaluate applicant as follows: (a) one point for each year attended at Jefferson Elementary School in La Crosse; (b) one point for each year attended at Logan Junior High or Middle School in La Crosse; (c) one point for each year attended at La Crosse Logan High School; (d) one point for demonstrated financial need pursuant to UW-L criteria; (e) one point for the highest grade point average within the pool of other qualified applicants for this scholarship; and (f) the qualified applicant with the greatest total number of points shall receive the scholarship; provided, however, that in cases of a tie, the Committee shall, in its discretion, make the decision.
  4. renew the scholarship for a continuing, qualified recipient; provided, however, that no student may receive the scholarship for more than four years.
  5. on a separate paper, list the scoring system points (a) through (c) with dates of attendance and total number of points and submit with your application

Established by Xcel Energy to benefit students served by Xcel Energy.

  2. either a major in computer science, biology with a concentration in environmental, any major within the College of Business Administration or any qualifying major within the College of Liberal Studies with a minor in environmental studies

UW-La Crosse Class of 1956 Scholarship
Established by the graduating UW-L class of 1956 to recruit entering freshmen students to UW-La Crosse.
Criteria:

  1. recipient must be an entering freshman enrolled full time at UW-L
  2. recipient must be in good academic standing with above average grade point average
  3. financial need should be considered
  4. no formal application required

Counselor Choice Award
$1,000 new freshmen award for multicultural students from Wisconsin or Minnesota.
Criteria:

  1. admitted Multicultural student (African-American, American Indian or Alaskan Native, Hispanic/Latino American, Southeast Asian or Asian/Pacific Islander) at UW-L
  2. resident of Wisconsin or Minnesota
  3. high school class rank in the top 40 percent or an ACT composite score of at least 19 (SAT 910) demonstrated leadership and/or involvement in high school or community
  4. financial need may be considered when awarding scholarships; priority will be given to candidates admitted to UW-L with FAFSA forms on file by March 15; applicants admitted after March 15 will be considered if awards are still available

Charles and Lillian Gay Scholarship Endowment Fund

Fund was established by the Gay family to support scholarships for students at UW-L.
Criteria:

  1. freshman to be enrolled full time
  2. good academic standing ranking in the top 10%
  3. at least a 25 on ACT
  4. financial need may be considered
  5. scholarship renewable up to three years if at least a 3.0 gpa is maintained

Frank and Margaret Kent Scholarship Fund
A bequest from the Kent estate for deserving students at UW-L to attain a college education.
Criteria:

  1. freshman to be enrolled full time
  2. must have shown scholastic ability and rank in the upper 10% of the high school class
  3. at least a 25 on ACT
  4. financial need must be demonstrated
  5. scholarship is renewable up to three years if at least a 3.0 gpa is maintained.

The M&I Foundation Freshmen Minority Scholarships for Milwaukee
Established by the M&I Foundation in 2010 to support scholarships for minority students attending UW-L from the central city of Milwaukee.
Criteria:

  1. Recipient must be an admitted freshman
  2. Recipient must be a minority from the central city of Milwaukee
  3. Demonstrated leadership and involvement in high school or community activities
  4. No application necessary – recipients selected by UW-L Admission counselors using the UW-L college entrance application

Non-Resident Tuition Grant
New freshmen grant valued at approximately $10,000 per year and renewable for up to three years as long as the student remains in good academic standing. The grant is designed to allow recipients to attend UW-L at Wisconsin resident tuition rates.
Criteria:

  1. admitted multicultural student (African-American, American Indian or Alaskan Native, Hispanic/Latino American, Southeast Asian or Asian/Pacific Islander) at UW-L
  2. non-resident of Wisconsin or Minnesota
  3. high school class rank in the top 25% or an ACT composite score of at least 21 (SAT 990)
  4. demonstrated leadership and/or involvement in high school or community
  5. financial need may be considered when awarding scholarships; priority will be given to candidates admitted to UW-L with FAFSA forms on file by March 15; applicants admitted after March 15 will be considered if awards are still available
  6. no formal application required (do not send an application)

Return to Wisconsin
The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Alumni Association offers a tuition discount program specifically designed for non-resident children and grandchildren of UW-L alumni.

"Return to Wisconsin" offers a 25 percent discount on the difference between resident and non-resident tuition. The discount for the 2010–2011 academic year is estimated at $1,700. This award does not apply to students who are residents of either Wisconsin or Minnesota.

In order to receive the award, eligible students must complete the application form (PDF) and return it to the Admissions Office. The Admissions Office will verify eligibility and notify the student of its decision.

Students would continue to pay all other costs at rates applicable to other students. Participation would continue for subsequent terms as long as the student remains in good standing and makes satisfactory academic progress.

The Diane L. Schumacher Enrollment Services Scholarship
Scholarship to recruit entering freshman to UW-La Crosse was established to honor Diane Schumacher, executive director of Enrollment Services Office, at her retirement in 2007.

Student Development/Academic Services Multicultural Student Scholarship
$500 new freshmen award renewable for up to three years as long as the student remains in good academic standing

  3. demonstrated leadership and/or involvement in high school or community
  4. to be renewed, demonstrated leadership and/or involvement in college
